Current Missions
At First United Methodist Church we live out our promise to help others by providing our members the opportunity to serve. There is a wide variety of missions for you to get involved with.
- Capital Area Food Bank – Bring donations of non-perishable food items, diapers and baby food to church on the first Sunday of each month. Leave donations in the shopping basket located near the handicap entrance in the foyer of the Sanctuary. Help deliver items to CAFB.

- Caritas – Bring donations of non-perishable food items (list will be provided) for Faith Food Drive 2 times a year (dates to be announced); donate to Caritas.

- Christmas Eve Brunch for the Homeless – Fundraise; find donations of food, drink, socks, and blankets; coordinate volunteers; buy groceries; cook brunch; decorate or clean up the Great Hall; clean kitchen and bathrooms; provide music; serve breakfast; bring cookies; visit with the homeless on Christmas Eve morning.

- Coats for Kids – Donate and/or help sort gently-used, clean coats for distribution to needy children and youth.

- CROP Walk – Find financial sponsors and walk at Roy Guerrero Municipal Park on the first weekend in March. Funds raised go to feed the hungry in Austin and around the world. Contact: Howard Hartman, 272-9211 or hhartman@churchworldservice.org
- Feed My People Fourth Tuesday Homeless Breakfast – Help with buying, prepping, cooking and serving food; cleaning kitchen, bathrooms and Great Hall of Family Life Center; visiting with homeless (at 5:30 a.m.).

- Interfaith Hospitality Network – Help host homeless families who stay at the Family Life Center for 1 week, four times a year. Duties include staying with families in the evenings (weekdays) and overnight and during the day (Saturday and Sunday); preparing meals, helping collect families’ belongings and delivering them to the FLC; taking families’ belongings to next church; setting up classrooms for families; buying groceries; cleaning classrooms, Great Hall, bathrooms, and kitchen after families stay.

- Manna Made Manifest – Buy supplies for Manna Bags (bags of non-perishable items for distribution to the homeless); help Tweeners (5th grade youth) sort supplies into bags and sell bags monthly on designated Sundays.

- Mobile Loaves and Fishes – Help feed the homeless on the streets of Austin; coordinate teams who prep and deliver food; help with food prep; deliver food in MLF truck; buy supplies; sort and stock supplies; clean and repair truck.

- Trinity Center – Prepare meal for the homeless and clean up afterwards and participate in a church service with the homeless at Trinity Center (located at 304 East 7th St. on the St. David’s Episcopal Church property) a few Sunday afternoons a year.

For Adult
Four Corners Native American Ministry Team - Travel to Shiprock, New Mexico, to repair homes on the Four Corners Navajo reservation one week each October; help raise funds for trip by participating in Café Mission and Navajo Taco Luncheon; help purchase food and supplies for trip; cook for volunteers on trip while at Shiprock.

- Habitat for Humanity – Raise funds for Habitat builds in the Austin area; volunteer to work on builds or provide food for a build.

- Hands on Housing – Repair homes in the Austin area 2 weekends a year.

- Mission to Mission (college students) – Travel to Mission, Texas, to repair homes in the colonias 1 week each year the first week of January; adult sponsors occasionally needed.

For Youth (Grades 9-12)
- Appalachia Service Project (ASP) – (9th-12th grades)– Travel to the Appalachian Mountain area 11 days in June each year to repair homes; fundraising for the trip; coordinating trip (includes purchase of supplies and finding overnight locations); adult sponsors occasionally needed.

- Angel Tree Project – Purchase or sponsor the purchase of gifts for the children of incarcerated Texas inmates (part of Prison Fellowship organization); occurs each November; gifts mailed before Christmas. FUMC is currently seeking an Angel Tree sponsor who will coordinate the program within the congregation. Contact Ann for more details.

- Austin Area Interreligious Ministries (AAIM) - Participate in organization that fosters cooperation and understanding between different faith systems and facilitates interreligious outreach into the community to benefit needy people.

- Alternative Gift Market – Provide funds for local, state, national and world-wide projects benefiting at-risk people and communities; help with organizing and selling “gifts”; 2 weekends in November and prep during September and October.

- Care Team – Help critically ill people in the Austin area with errands, transportation to medical appointments, picking up prescriptions; visit with critically ill in their homes; ongoing during the year; training required.

- Ortega Project – Help organize donations or fund Christmas gifts for needy children at Ortega Elementary School in East Austin; help deliver gifts; participate in Ortega Day (activities surrounding the distribution of the gifts); gift drive occurs in November; Ortega Day is December 6th

- Red Cross Emergency Shelter – Be available for training should FUMC be designated an emergency shelter; volunteer at shelter; help set up shelter; help clean and reorganize buildings afterward; occurs as needed.

- Russia Team – Travel to Russia usually 1 time a year to participate in church activities (conduct Vacation Bible School, work with orphans, share the good news of the Gospel, etc.) at Good News UMC in Vologda, Russia; fundraise for trip; provide items needed for trip.

- E.S.L. Ministry – Teach English and American customs to non- or limited-English speakers each Thursday morning at FUMC, 10:00-12:00; training provided.

- FP Future View – Work with middle and high school at-risk youth at selected AISD schools to help them widen their perspectives on education and the world of work and to give them practice with social skills; ongoing during the school year; training provided.

- Pickle Elementary School – Help support the students and staff of Pickle Elementary through book drives, mentorships, participation in Career Fairs, donations for school supplies.

FUMC's United Methodist Women unit is part of a national organization that is involved in mission education, direct service, and mission advocacy locally and globally. The FUMC UMW unit is made up of five circles (subgroups) that meet at various times each month.

Several Sunday School classes and many individuals provide regular financial support for missions locally (such as Montopolis Friendship Center) and around the world. First UMC pays its United Methodist apportionments and mission askings each year, which underwrite missionary support and mission projects locally and globally.
We support the work of Roy and Janet May, missionaries in Costa Rica.
