Welcome to your landing spot

for First United Methodist's 175th Anniversary.

Celebrating Your Service!

The celebration continues! Beginning June 1st and continuing through November 22nd, First Church will be celebrating service.

We know that our members take seriously the Reverend Wright’s calls to action, and we want to recognize your efforts. The Mercy and Justice Team has developed an online tracking tool designed to record all of the ways in which our members serve—with the church and in the community. Do you deliver Meals on Wheels, mentor youth in the community, serve at the FreeStore, sort groceries at the Capital Area Food Bank, volunteer with Mobile Loaves & Fishes, work with your child’s PTA ? We want to know!

We will be recording and tracking our members’ service during these 175 days to elevate the great work that you are doing.

Full Speed AHEAD!

The message was clear on anniversary Sunday. Bishop Dorff asked a 400-plus congregation to keep looking ahead to the future, to where God is leading us, not to where we’ve been.

“In 175 years First Church Austin has touched so many people, in so many ways, for so long. This church has a glorious past. And today is a day to give thanks to God for that.

What is the challenge for those with a glorious past?

The challenge is succumbing to the temptation to look back instead of forward….. Remember, it’s not important where we have been, it is important where God is leading us into the future,” Bishop Jim Dorff said.

The 175th Anniversary celebration kicked off on Saturday with a variety show featuring performers ranging from dancing, singing, poetry-reading to musicianship across 16 different acts.

Then on Sunday, two worship services were followed by a luncheon in the Family Life Center. More than 300 people enjoyed Black’s Barbeque and melt-in-your-mouth desserts that were baked by FUMC members.

The trip down “memory lane” was certainly a highlight of the day. The historical exhibit included important mementos and photos of our rich history, and even included cookbooks, old bulletins, pictures and newspaper clippings from our past. The display will be kept in the Family Life Center for one more Sunday – be sure to stop by to see it on January 25th.

The celebration continues through the month of June. Mark your calendar to hear our guest preachers and to attend our new church wide Sunday school series, “Coffee Stops and Bible Talks".
