Who We Are

Who We Are

The Pride—our LBGTQ+ community group—welcomes people of all ages to join together in Christian fellowship as we journey and grow our faith in beloved community within FUMC Austin.

We are LGBTQ+ people who participate in all of the ministries and activities that FUMC Austin offers. We teach Sunday School and usher, welcoming people to worship. We sing in the Chancel Choir and the Modern Worship band. We serve on committees, in ministry with our unhoused neighbors, and much more—offering our unique gifts to this faith community.

The Pride is focused on cultivating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all LGBTQ+ siblings within FUMC Austin and throughout our community.  We support individuals and families with love and respect.

What We Believe

What We Believe

We believe that every human being is a beloved child of God. We believe that each human being is on a journey toward God, with God. We freely admit that we do not have all the answers. We believe that Jesus points the way and that all are welcome—no exceptions.

God’s love is inherently inclusive, embracing all individuals regardless of their identity. Any agenda that seeks to exclude or marginalize LGBTQ+ individuals contradicts the very essence of Christ’s teachings, which were about breaking barriers and extending love beyond conventional limits. Jesus dined with outcasts, healed the marginalized, and challenged societal norms to embrace those often left on the fringes. This spirit of inclusivity and acceptance is the true heart of Christianity and embracing these values means affirming the full worth of every person as a Beloved child of God.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

— I John 3:1

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

— Galatians 3:28

“Whoever loves God is known by God.”

— I Corinthians 8:3

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.”

— Psalm 139:14

“God is love, and the one who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in them… There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears is not complete in love… We love because He first loved us. If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar… And we have this command from Him: the one who loves God must also love his brother and sister.”

1 John 4:7-21

If any of these scriptures make you curious about the healthy role church could have in your life, we invite you to explore this community of faith, which is centered in
Christ’s inclusive love. We believe that healing, hope, and joy are gifts of this community. Transformation happens here.

More Resources

First United Methodist Church of Austin went through a churchwide discernment process related to marriage equality. On Sunday, July 14, 2019, the congregation of FUMC declared by an affirmative vote of 98 percent, that its facilities are available to all couples seeking the blessing of marriage, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Nearly five years later, the United Methodist Church affirmed this decision at the General Conference that Christian marriage is "a sacred, lifelong covenant that brings two people of faith, an adult man and woman of consenting age, or two adult persons of consenting age into union with one another." At FUMC Austin, the pastors and community welcome the opportunity to celebrate marriages between people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
